Steve Adler – Rhetorical Essay

Steve Adler is a candidate for mayor in Austin, Texas for the upcoming year of 2015. Steve Adler’s audience is the voters in Austin from ages 18 and on, also the audience is citizens living in Austin, Texas who are feeling the pressure of being able to afford their house payments. His argument that was posted on September 8, 2014 says he is to ensure that our families can afford to live in Austin and share its benefits and manage its growth. Since Austin is so diverse with our different ethnicities seniors, students, and artists, but we are becoming a city that is too expensive for many of us to live here.
The ethos Adler uses and the kind of person he sees himself as is a person who cares about the people of Austin and wants a diverse group of people still able to afford to live in this unique city. In the speech where he establishes his character is when he says “Today Austin has become the most expensive city in Texas. We have become less diverse and less affordable. Diversity is the core of Austin, woven into the spirit and soul.” This shows Adler’s character by telling the audience listening/reading his speech that he wants the best for our city and he will do what he can to make our city affordable. His character is caring, sympathetic, and determined to achieve his goals for our city.
Adler also establishes his credibility to the audience by saying “Central East Austin from 2000-2010, we saw a twenty- seven percent decrease in our African American population and a 9.3 percent decrease in our Hispanic population.” When the people who make a city can’t afford to live here, when senior citizens and other long-term residents living on fixed on incomes can’t afford to live here, when our kids graduating from school can’t afford to live in the town that they grew up in – we have a serious problem. This shows his credibility by presenting himself as a strong independent person, who is very trustworthy because he has all of the things he wants to fix and how he will proceed to do so.
Adler uses logos in his speech by saying two examples Adler uses in his speech is “Now: fifty-five percent of African American kids under 18 years old and forty-four percent of Hispanic kids under 18 years old live in poverty. Austin is the second fastest growth of suburban poverty in the nation and Austin’s poverty rate has gone up by one-hundred percent over the last decade, a full time worker must make $20.65 an hour to afford the average rent for a two bedroom unit.” Steve Adler is hoping to get an eye-opening reaction, he is hoping to get the reaction of people saying “Wow how am I going to afford my home, bills, and everyday needs when I have a job that doesn’t even pay half of that an hour.”
In Adler’s speech he uses pathos such as the music playing in the background. The music when he first starts to talk about affordability is slow and almost sad but once he keeps talking and then it almost becomes inspirational. Adler starts talking about ways to fix this problem and make Austin an affordable place to live and grow.
Adler also uses connotative language by saying “If we lose the diversity in the city, we will lose a pretty special place.” If you live and love Austin that is pretty sad to hear, to which also relates to pathos. The emotions are associated in this quote by saying why would you want to lose the diversity? Austin is the live music capital of the world which comes from many diverse cultures and ethnicity’s if we lose that then we would most likely lose that title.
In his speech there is the use of reputation of words such as “Afford”. Adler repeats this world because that is the essential topic of the speech, Affordability and how we are going to be able to afford to live in Austin. The pathos he uses is mainly in the video speech and you can tell by the tone of his voice and body language. I believe that this was a great speech for his audience because the people need to understand on how the city they live in could bring them into poverty, and that we need to do something quick.
